Room Cleaning Procedure (SOP)

1. Preparation Before Entering the Room

  1. Collect the room assignment sheet from the housekeeping office
  2. Check room status (Vacant, Dirty / Occupied / DND / Checkout).
  3. Prepare trolley:
    • Fresh linen (bed sheets, pillow covers, duvet cover)
    • Towels (bath, hand, face, bath mat)
    • Amenities (soap, shampoo, lotion, tea/coffee, water, tissue)
    • Cleaning chemicals & tools
  4. Ensure the trolley is neat and organized (clean on top, dirty at the bottom).
  5. Wash your hands and wear gloves.

2. Entering the Guest Room (Standard Etiquette)

  1. Stand beside the door — never in front of the peephole.
  2. Knock 3 times and announce:
    “Housekeeping…”
  3. Wait 10 seconds → knock again → announce again.
  4. If no response → open the door slowly using the master key.
  5. Insert the door stopper and switch on all lights.
  6.  If the guest is inside, greet politely and ask for a convenient cleaning time.

3. Initial Inspection & Ventilation

  1. Open curtains & windows (if possible) for fresh air.
  2. Check for:
    • Lost & found items
    • Damage in the room
    • Maintenance issues
  3. Turn the AC to ventilation mode.
  4. Collect used room service trays (inform F&B).

4. Remove Linen & Trash

  1. Remove all dirty towels → place them in a linen bag.
  2. Strip the bed:
    • Pillow covers
    • Bedsheet
    • Duvet cover
    • Never shake linen (prevents dust spread).
       
  3. Collect trash from:
    • Waste bins
    • Desk
    • Bathroom
  4. Separate recyclable items if the hotel policy.

5. Bathroom Cleaning (Always Clean First in Checkout Rooms)

a. Apply Chemicals (Top to Bottom Method)

  1. Spray toilet bowl cleaner inside the WC.
  2. Spray sink, counter, bathtub & tiles.
  3. Leave the chemical for 2–3 minutes (dwell time).

b. Clean Area

  1. Clean mirror (no streaks).
  2. Scrub sink & counter.
  3. Scrub the shower area & bathtub.
  4. Clean toilet (inside → outside → flush handle last).
  5. Dry all chrome fittings (no water marks).
     

c. Replace Items

  • Fresh towels
  • Bath mat
  • Tissue roll (triangle fold)
  • Amenities arranged neatly
  • Complimentary items (Fruits, Nuts, and Chocolate

6. Bed Making (Hotel Standard Method)

Step 1: Mattress Preparation

  1. Check the mattress protector
  2. Remove wrinkles
  3. Align the mattress to the headboard

Step 2: Make the Bed

 The bed must look tight, smooth, wrinkle-free

7. Dusting & Cleaning the Room (Clockwise Method)

Start from the entrance and move clockwise around the room:

  • Door & handle
  • Wardrobe
  • Luggage rack
  • Desk & chair
  • TV & remote
  • Telephone
  • Lamps & switches
  • Window panels
  • Headboard
  • Side tables

Use a dry cloth

8. Replenish Guest Supplies

Arrange neatly and symmetrically:

Bedroom

  • Water bottles
  • Tea/coffee amenities
  • Room Sleeper
  • Notepad & pen
  • Dustbin paper or plastic

Bathroom

  • Soap, shampoo, lotion
  • Dental kit (if policy)
  • Shower cap
  • Sanitary bag

9. Vacuum & Floor Cleaning (Last Step)

  1. Start from the far corner → move toward exit.
  2. Under bed
  3. Behind curtains
  4. Carpet edges
  5. Bathroom floor (mop if needed)

10. Final Inspection (Self-Check Standard)

Stand at the entrance and scan the room:

✔ No dust
✔ Lights working
✔ Temperature comfortable
✔ Perfect Bed
✔ Complete Amenities and placement as per standard
✔ No stains or hair in the bathroom
✔ Curtains aligned 

Spray mild room freshener or R5 in the room and bathroom  (1–2 sprays only).

11. Closing the Room

  1. Switch off unnecessary lights (keep standard lighting).
  2. Remove trolley & equipment.
  3. Close the door gently.
  4. Update room status in report:
    VD → VC (Vacant Clean)

 Standard Time

  • Stayover Room: 12–15 minutes
     
  • Checkout Room: 18–25 minutes
     
  • Suite Room: 30–45 minutes
